My name is Shobita, and I’m a member of Breast Cancer Action’s all-volunteer Board of Directors. For more than ten years, I’ve admired BCAction’s fiercely independent advocacy on behalf of women’s health, and I was honored to join the Board in 2014.

Today I’m asking you to join me in making a donation to Breast Cancer Action. If you make a gift by June 30, it will be doubled.

I first discovered BCAction’s work while doing research for my book comparing the development of genetic testing for breast and ovarian cancer in the U.S. and Great Britain. At the time, almost no one was challenging the idea that human genes, like the “breast cancer genes,” BRCA 1 & 2, could be patented.

As a member of the all-volunteer Board in charge of ensuring we fulfill our mission, I get to see the behind the scenes into the day-to-day at BCAction. I am deeply impressed with how much our powerful and passionate staff accomplishes on a small, very lean budget.

I deeply believe in BCAction’s work, which is why I’m pledging, along with my fellow Board members, to match your gift dollar-for-dollar between now and June 30th.

Breast Cancer Action’s work makes a real difference in the lives of women at risk of and living with breast cancer. Thanks to BCAction’s role as a plaintiff in the groundbreaking U.S. Supreme Court case that overturned patents on the BRCA 1 & 2 genes, today women have access to genetic testing at a fraction of the cost. And no longer is one company creating a bottleneck to research on targeted therapies by claiming to own and control these human genes.

I am proud to work with women who stand up for women’s health in the face of power.

Please make your gift today to help Breast Cancer Action continue working toward its mission to achieve health justice for all women at risk of and living with breast cancer.

Thank you for joining us.
